Good Talk!

I thought about what I would blog about today all day long. I had a couple of ideas on my plate but today I’m going to communicate with you and mean it. The amount of time we spend with people on a daily basis is staggering. In fact it's not uncommon to be without human contact for an entire day. Some of us are introverts and some of us are extroverts and others are a mix of the above. Communication is vital to the survival of all relationships.

Stress is one thing that affects our body and poor communication can come with a price. Whether it be family, co-workers or any relationship you may be in; there are some key factors in being a good communicator. One, being a good listener; two, knowing the importance of what the other party is trying to communicate to you and three, being open and honest with your feelings.

Lets start by saying, great communication can't happen without all parties willing to listen. There is a difference between acting like you’re listening and going through the motions and truly listening. Listening involves being present wholeheartedly. If you already have something on your mind you want to say before the other person finishes talking, you are not listening. No one ever said communication is easy. Communication takes patience.

Being honest and open with your feelings takes vulnerability which should not be taken lightly by any participant in any conversation. It takes courage to speak from the heart. Understanding the importance of what is being communicated is key. I learned a great tool one day from a counselor. If you are confused as to how important something is to someone just ask them to number it. On a scale from 1-10 with 10 being the most important how important is this to you? It may surprise you to find out. I have done this before and totally misinterpreted the importance of what the other party needed from me.

So, with all that being said, communication goes a long way. It’s good for your health and for your relationships. So when someone says to you, good talk! Lets hope they mean it.

Signing off for now. Until next be healthy.
